Middletown house fire ruled accidental
MIDDLETOWN, Del. – A fire that heavily damaged a Middletown house Sunday morning has been ruled accidental by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The Volunteer Hose Company responded to the fire, located in the 100 block of East Lake Street, shortly after 11 AM. On arrival, officials noted the fire coming from a house that contained two apartments.
State fire investigators determined that the fire began in the living room of a ground floor apartment, where an electrical extension cord powering a space heater failed, igniting a nearby couch.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Damage was estimated at $100,000. Four adults and three children have been displaced as a result of the fire, who are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross.
