Marathon honors the memory of former Salisbury University Alumni President

OCEAN CITY, Md. – A loving husband, brother and trailblazer – these are just some of the ways community members are remembering former Salisbury University Alumni President Robert (Rob) T. Schultheis.

“Rob was obviously a great father, husband, friend and he was one of those people that always made time for everyone,” said Salisbury University Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations, Jayme Block.

On Sunday, over 100 people came out to the annual Run the Boards Like Rob 5-K to honor Schultheis who died back in 2015 from an accident while running.

“He was always positive, always positive, and there was never a negative comment or thought out of his head ever,” said Cheryl Filipiak, a local resident.

Rob’s older brother Paul Schultheis said the Ocean City boardwalk was one of Rob’s favorite places to meet people, but most of all, it was his favorite place to do what he loved most – running.

“We grew up on the western shore,” said Paul.

“He came down to Salisbury University and just never came home, and he made his new home down here, started a family, Salisbury University family and all of Ocean City area,” said Paul.

Rob’s family said that they want his legacy to live on, and that is why they started hosting marathons years ago. But, he said this is the first year Salisbury University organized the event supporting the Robert T. Schultheis Memorial Scholarship.

“All the proceeds will go to that scholarship fund to continue to help that grow and help SU students,” said Block.

“We want my brother’s name to live on in perpetuity,” said Paul.

“We don’t want anyone to forget him and to have it be part of the university that he was such a big part of is just really great,” said Paul.

Paul said that even though Rob is no longer here, he hopes events like these will help the community to always remember his little brother.

“It was three of us,” Paul said.

“Myself, Rob and my younger brother TJ, and we were just typical brothers, but we were all best friends at the end of it, and I just miss him,” he said.

According to Block, Salisbury University has already fundraised 22,ooo dollars for the Robert T. Schultheis Memorial Scholarship. But, they hope to raise even more money in the coming years in order to continue supporting students.
