OCEAN CITY, Md. – One local veteran will host a live chainsaw carving in honor of veterans next month.

Alex Mitchell, a Marine Veteran and current resident of Ocean Pines, will be hosting the event. He has been struggling with mental illness his entire life, and he understands the challenges veterans face on a daily basis.

“I’m always trying to do things in the community and I’m excited to be someone who can bring people together for a good cause,” says Mitchell.

Carving artist, Anthony Maquez from XVII Carvings, will perform the carving. Marquez is a United States Marine Corps Veteran, whose last deployment was in 2011. In 2016, Marquez made it his mission to create chainsaw carvings for each family member who lost their son during his 2011 deployment, in which 17 members were lost.

The event will take place at the K-Coast Surf Shop on 36th Street in Ocean City, on Friday November 9th. The carving will begin at 9 AM, and is expected to take approximately 6-7 hours to complete. Veteran artists will also be on site selling their work, donating one piece per artist to the cause. All proceeds will benefit the Community Building Arts Work (CBAW), an organization that builds healthy and connected communities where veterans and civilians share creative expression, mutual understanding, and support. More information on CBAW can be found here.
