Local law enforcement educates public about suspicious package protocol
SALISBURY, Md. – The Clintons, the Obamas, Joe Biden, and more. They’ve all received dangerous packages in the mail over the past few days, but what if these packages were to arrive on the eastern shore?
Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said, “If there was a threat of this nature we would respond accordingly.”
Lieutenant Jason Yankalunas of the Salisbury Police Department said, “A bomb threat should be taken seriously until its deemed to be false.”
In the event that Salisbury were to see a serious threat, law enforcement says there’s special measures they take to keep you safe.
Lewis said, “We certainly have experts in the area to respond with us. Those are members of our alcohol tobacco and firearms unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have a local FBI office in Wicomico County.”
Police also tell 47 ABC, Wicomico County would develop their own independent investigation in conjunction to an FBI investigation should a suspicious package pose a threat to security.
That said, the FBI says signs of a suspicious package include things like no return address, poor penmanship, excessive postage and or a strange odor, to name a few.
However, now that you know the signs, there is no reason to panic.
Lewis also said, “We have no reason to believe there any any threats in our area.”
Yankalunas said, “There’s a fine line between preparedness and paranoia, and we’re trying to thread that needle and we don’t want people to be afraid.”
However the one thing authorities do want you to keep in mind, is to keep an eye out for unusual activity.
He also said, “We want to remain with the ‘see something, say something’ mantra.”
