Local family selected for Habitat Home in Worcester County
BERLIN, Md. – Habitat for Humanity of Worcester County (HFHWC) has announced that one local family will soon have a new house in Bishopville.
Ocean Pines resident Ashley Zlotorzynski found out back in March that she had been selected for home ownership through HFHWC, which was a dream come true for her.
“Owning my first home is everything to me. It’s the goal I’ve had and what I want to do for my children. They’ve been through so much and they deserve something to call their own. It’s a dream come true, really.”, said Zlotorzynski.
Applicants undergo a rigid review process by Habitat’s Family Selection Committee, and must demonstrate a need for better housing as well as be able to meet income/payment requirements on the new home. The chosen family is also required to give 400 hours of their time by assisting with the construction of their new home, attending financial management classes, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
Funding comes from several sources, including individual donations, sponsorships, donations, and grants. We’re told Habitat recently received $40,000 from The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, as well as $5,000 from Merrill Lynch to go towards the construction of the new house.
There are many opportunities to volunteer with Habitat through the Bishopville Build, at the ReStore, or in the office. Those interested in volunteering or donating to the Bishopville Build may call 410-208-4440, or visit their website here.
