Federal grant to help turn Pirates Wharf into regional park

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.  – Over 300 acres of farmland could soon become a brand-new regional park. The county received a $820,000 grant through National Park Service for this property, better known as Pirates Wharf.

If approved by county council, this land would turn into a park with public water access to the Wicomico River, hiking and biking trails while keeping it as natural as possible.

“We think it’s a beautiful location on the Wicomico River. There’s not a lot of public access on the Wicomico River so that’s one of the goals and I think people will love to come out here. I think that’s part of the attractiveness of this property is that it is somewhat remote and peaceful and I think people will enjoy it,” explains Steve Miller, Director of Wicomico County Parks and Recreation.

County Executive Bob Culver says the county already has the money saved up from leasing the land for years, so $1.5 million is already put away to help with this project.

County Council still has to approve the grant before the county accepts the money, but if they do the public will be able to help with the planning process.
