Election officials give tips just in case there’s voter suppression

SALISBURY, Md. – The general election is less than one week away.

Voter suppression and harassment is something that we haven’t seen here locally, but have seen it happen in other states nationwide. But election officials are still giving some tips for those heading to the polls.

Wicomico County’s Election Director, Anthony Gutierrez says the first step of action is to contact the chief judge inside the polling place and report any type of suppression.

From there, the election office will respond. Wicomico County has an active local board do an investigation following the report and contact local authorities if needed. “It’s not so much how the office defines voter suppression so kind of in the eye of the beholder, so if any one has any kind of complaint. Because one person’s definition is very different from another’s so we want to hear from any voter that feels that they are being suppressed in any way,” Gutierrez says.

For anyone campaigning outside, there is a barrier limit 100 feet away. Periodically, election judges will go outside to monitor them so they are in their boundaries.

If you come across any type of suppression or harassment, you can contact their office at 410-548-4830.

As a reminder, early voting in Maryland ends Thursday night.
