Dover holds off ferocious Smyrna comeback to move to 6-1
SMYRNA, Del- The Dover Senators defeated the Smyrna Eagles 46-38 last night. With the win the Senators move to 6-1 on the year and the loss for Smyrna drops the Eagles to 2-4.
Smyrna has had some tall tasks in the past couple of weeks starting with Sussex Central, a game in which the fell for their first conference loss since the 2014 season. Then up came last night’s matchup with one of the conference’s best Dover Senators.
It was all Senators early, Dover QB Jordan Magee scoring two touchdowns through the air, the first to Raekwon Jackson from eight yards out then another to Javon Peace for a 23 yard score to put the Dover up 14-0 to end the first quarter.
To start the second, Smyrna put together their first drive to make it into the redzone but the play of the game ended that drive. Stretching for the end zone, Stephen Whaley gets it knocked out at the one and Javon Peace picks it up and races 99 yards untouched for the score to extend the lead to 22-0.
The Eagles would put together another nice drive inside the 20 but on a questionable pass interference no call in the end zone, Smyrna coach Mike Judy would draw two personal foul calls back to back and eventually get ejected from the game pumping up the crowd and his team. With a 3rdand about 30 Smyrna would get two big chunk plays, the second being a 13 yard touchdown run by Stephen Whaley to cut the Senator lead to 22-8.
Javon Peace would tack on another score from 24 yards out to end the half to make the halftime score 30-8.

To start the second half the Eagles came out firing, just four minutes into the half QB Aidan Sanchez hit a wide open Emon Roberts and he runs it in for the 51 yard touchdown. Two point conversion would be good so the Dover l
ead cut in half 30-16 early in the second half. The following kickoff the Eagles gamble with the onside kick and recover but an inadvertent whistle by the ref leads to a re-kick and the Eagles recover again to get the ball back and a chance to make it a one score game.
The following driver would lead to another Stephen Whaley touchdown this time from seven yards out, two point good so just like that the score is 30-22. Eagles would try the onside again but it unsuccessful this time leads to a 55 yard touchdown pass from Jordan Magee to James Ashley, his third of the game makes it a two score game again 38-22.
It was a back and forth second half, on the next Smyrna possession Aidan Sanchez would hit Emon Robert for the second time from 6 yards out to cut it to eight points for the second time. Dover did not slow down, they would take the next drive 80 yards capping it off with a 6 yard touchdown run by Javon Peace, his fourth score of the game with just over eight minutes left to go. Score 46-30.
The Eagles would score another touchdown with 1:04 left to play, a Sanchez pass to Mahki Jackson to make it a one score game but it just wasn’t enough, the Smyrna onside kick attempt got tipped out of bounds by Dover to ice the game as the Senators hold on to beat Smyrna 46-38.
Dover will look to continue their hot streak next Friday when they travel to Woodside to take on the Polytech Panthers. Smyrna will try and get back in the win column next Friday when they travel to Georgetown to take on the Sussex Tech Ravens.
