Candidates for the Delaware House of Representatives District 20 present views

LEWES, Del. – Republican Delaware State Representative Steve Smyk, Democrat John Bucchioni and Libertarian Harry Smouse, Jr. are all looking to win the spot of Delaware State House of Representatives District 20.

With Smyk, his plea to the voters is that he is experienced and wants to continue to build on the work he has already done, such as with state provided services.

“We’ve had poor government at the state level for the way that we’ve offered services for the state services to the public,” said Smyk.

Smyk said the state is failing in providing help with mental health and substance abuse for residents. Now he wants to work close with new legislators to fix this problem.

“Now I’m looking to continue that growth, welcome new legislators that are coming in and see if we can put an emphasis in on the growth in this area when it comes to budgetary issues,” said Smyk.

Meanwhile, businessman Bucchioni said he wants to bring more money to local businesses and organizations, an area he said he is ready to take action in.

“I’ve been to over 37 meetings in the area with many of the area’s activist groups and also with scientists, EPA and so on,” said Bucchioni.

“The infrastructure with the roads and the infrastructure with the internet are absolutely key, and that’s what I did in business was to set up remote areas across the country,” said Bucchioni.

For Libertarian Harry Smouse, Jr., though, his focus is on gun ownership issues and abortion.

“[District 20] a really great place,” said Smouse.

“We don’t have a lot of issues, and everybody complains about the traffic, but that’s the price of living in paradise,” said Smouse.

Another topic of focus among the candidates includes improving the area’s drinking water and street infrastructure.
