Autism Delaware hosts autism friendly fall festival in Sussex Co.

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. – Kids with autism from all across the First State gathered in Bridgeville on Sunday to celebrate the fall season in their own way.

According to recent studies, in the United States one out of 59 children under the age of eight will be diagnosed with autism.

That is why the non-profit organization Autism Delaware brought out families Sunday morning to their annual fall festival where kids with autism could play with sensory friendly games.

According to the Policy and Program Coordinator of Autism Delaware, Sarah Young, these festivals are a way for families to find support in the community.

“People with autism tend to have challenges with general community events, so we try to make our events easier for them, but allow them to come out and have fun like they would in a public setting,” said Young.

“[My son] is in the process of receiving his diagnosis for autism, and I just wanted to see him around other kids who maybe were a little like him because this is new, and I don’t know anybody else with autism,” said a local resident, Nichole Lake.

Young said that Autism Delaware hosts events once a month across the state for families affected by autism.
