Amended zoning code could give Salisbury taxpayers much needed break
SALISBURY, Md. – In Salisbury, the City Council took the first step in amending a zoning code that could help give taxpayers in the area a break. On Monday, Council passed the first reading of the zoning code that would limit the amount of parking spaces developers in the area could have.
According to Mayor Jake Day, retailers and businesses in the area have way more parking spaces than they actually need, which is ultimately becoming a huge cost to the city and tax payers who are paying for the maintenance of these extended areas. And he says something must be done.
“Any time we expand the built environment, any time we spread things apart for something like parking, a single use asphalt surface what we do is we make everything else more expensive. This is essentially saying we are going to no longer unnecessarily mandate that our built environment cost the taxpayer extra money to maintain and we’re going to fix that,” said Day.
Day says the Council will hopefully revisit the topic and look to adopt the new zoning code within the next couple of weeks.
