Woodbridge falls to Friends on last second field goal

GREENWOOD, Del– The Woodbridge Blue Raiders lost a heartbreaker to Wilmington Friends last night 24-21. Woodridge falls to 1-2 on the year with two consecutive losses.

It’s a rivalry that’s heated up over the past few years and last night was no exception. The Blue Raiders have taken the last three matchups including a state title matchup in which Woodbridge win 14-9 in 2016.

Woodbridge would strike first, Jamon Kane 34 yards to the house to make it 7-0 three minutes in. Friends would answer back, scoring 14 unanswered including a five yard touchdown by Peyton McNeil and then a 65 yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Nelson to Quinten McAbee midway through the second quarter.

On their next drive, Senior QB Troy Haynes would take the Blue Raiders down the field and go one yard for the equalizer to tie it up at 14 a piece with 1:50 left in the second.

With time winding down in the half, Friends QB Wyatt Nelson took control of the game with a commanding drive down the field ending with a touchdown pass to Will Davis to put Wilmington up 21-14 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Blue Raiders needed a spark to get back in this one. After a defensive stand and an long nine minute drive to the Friends 17, Woodbridge would top it off on 4th and 17 and with a Troy Haynes pass to Brock Keeler just like its a tie game 21-21 with 10:35 left to play.

After trading punts, Woodbridge would get the ball on their own 15 but an interception by Peyton McNeil ends that drive. Friends running the clock down to 25 seconds kick the game winning 28 yard field goal by Jake Jaworski.

Woodbridge will look to get back to .500 next Friday the 28th

when they travel to Laurel to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
