UPDATE: All victims identified, Del. fatal train crash
Three people were hit by a train in Georgetown
GEORGETOWN, Del. – Georgetown Police released the names of all three victims involved in a horrific train crash, Sunday morning.
The victims are 33-year-old Ceilia Vincencio-Cruz, 29-year-old Widmer Roblero-Ortiz and 25-year-old Mario Niz-Lopez all from Georgetown. Vincencio-Cruz was pronounced dead on the scene, while Niz-Lopez and Roblero-Ortiz were listed in critical condition at Christiana Hospital on Tuesday.
Investigators say the victims were laying on the tracks near North Bedford Street, just before 1 AM, when a carload express freight train traveling northbound hit them.
Markos Arnez-Davis, a close friend of the victim said, “My friend lost her life.”
Shaken by tragedy, the Georgetown community is grieving the loss. But Georgetown Police say, sadly, this isn’t the first time they’ve seen something like this.
Detective Joey Melvin said, “It’s definitely something that our agency pays attention to, as we’ve seen collisions in the past.”
They tell 47 ABC they’re taking extra steps to stop tragedies like this from happening.
Melvin also said, “Unfortunately its something we do see and we’re doing everything we can to prevent it in the future.”
As of right now, the police department is considering increasing patrol along the train tracks as well as advising people to avoid walking on or near the train tracks in the first place.
The police department also tells us they recognize how deeply saddened the community is which is why they’re making it their goal to address every case seriously.
Melvin also said, “It touches our community because most of the time they’re known in our community. So we take that very seriously.”
