Sussex Co. airport receives $5.5 million grant
GEORGETOWN, Del. – The town of Georgetown is going to see some infrastructure improvements. That’s because the Delaware Coastal Airport received a nice chunk of change to help its facility.
On Wednesday, Senator Tom Carper announced a $5.5 million F.A.A. grant for the airport.
This grant will be used to make a parallel taxiway, to improve the approach system when landing an aircraft. We’re told this is crucial because it makes the airport safer, especially when there’s bad weather. The airport manager tells 47 ABC this is beneficial because in the last 5 years they’ve connected with 700 airports around the country, and these airports tend to have smaller aircraft.
“So the aircraft that really need the crossway runway when the winds are out of limits for them on the main runway, and the weather is bad, so this will open up more opportunity for aircraft from the smaller airports to come here,” said Jim Hickin, Delaware Coastal Airport manager.
The main construction of the taxiway is expected to begin at the start of spring 2019.
