SU Professor discusses Maryland Gubernatorial Debate
Monday night marked the first and only gubernatorial debate happening between democratic nominee Ben Jealous and Governor Larry Hogan before the general election.
Both parties brought their best arguments to the table and addressed important issues in the State of Maryland like the opioid epidemic and gun control.
On Tuesday, 47ABC sat down with a local professor of politics to break down and analyze the heated debate.
When debating, Salisbury University Political Professor Dr. Mike O’Loughlin says it’s important for candidates to have a strategy.
Dr. O’Loughlin said, “They both did what they had to do in terms of their strategy”
For Governor Larry Hogan, it was a strategy of defense.
Dr. O’Loughlin said, “Basically, the polls indicate that there’s a good approval for Hogan after his four years so there’s less of a need to articulate a more extensive vision.”
As for Jealous, his strategy was to lay out a clear plan of what he intends to do as governor as well as undermine the governor and point out his shortcomings.
“Jealous really has to counteract that and say this isn’t enough, the status quo isn’t enough. We need a bolder vision to take us further into the 21st century,” Dr. O’Loughlin said.
While taking on Governor Larry Hogan was certainly a challenge, in the opinion of Dr. O’Laughlin, Jealous did a good job.
“I think Jealous did well in terms of his laying out the vision that he was offering as alternative to Hogan,” he said.
As for Governor Hogan, Dr. O’Laughlin told 47ABC he played defense with grace, respect and facts to back himself up.
Dr. O’Loughlin said, “I think Hogan, in the give and take, he was responsive. I don’t think there were any major gaffs in the rhetoric he was laying out.”
Overall, Dr. O’Loughlin believes both candidates brought their A-game Monday night, and while the debate at times got heated, both candidates remained civil.
So with no clear winner, it all comes down to you, the voter to decide who will be Maryland’s next governor.
Again, this is the only debate that will be taking place between the two candidates before the general election.
Dr. O’Loughlin says it’s important for you to do your research before heading out to the polls and casting your vote.
