Salisbury University opens new student career closet

SALISBURY, Md. – Yoga pants, hoodies, t-shirts and more is what you’ll find most college kids wearing on a day to day basis. But those fashions won’t quite cut it in the business world.

“Employers look for how you dress, that’s a very big indication of how you’re going to do at your job so if you don’t dress properly, how are they going to know that you’re going to do the job that they need you to do,” said Salisbury University Junior Andrea Kline.

The job and internship search can be stressful as is, but when it comes to figuring out exactly what to wear to an interview, many students are at a loss. But a new initiative called the career closet at Salisbury University is looking to fix that by allowing students to borrow professional clothing to wear for those important days.

“The idea came from the fact that when we look at career fairs and job fairs students are not always dressed professionally ,” said Director of Marking for the university’s Student Government Association Tasneem Elbashir.

The career closet has dozens of outfits for students to choose from that could help them land their dream job by making them go from drab…to fab. But there’s also a catch–Students who wish to borrow clothes from the closet first must have their resumes reviewed by the university’s career services office.

“We don’t want them to just look professional, we want them to come professional so we want them to have their resume reviewed and stuff like that so they have to get their resume reviewed and then they can actually get into the career closet,” said Elbashir.

Even though the closet’s only been open for about a week, it’s already caught the attention of students.

“I have an interview tomorrow, I might have to go get an outfit from there,” said Salisbury University Junior Jason French.

“I wouldn’t mind that it would be a very helpful thing to have,” said Kline.

Organizers of the career closet add that they see a bright future for the new program and they only hope to expand their services from here. Members of the university’s student government association are looking to expand the closet with more clothes, shoes, and everything else you’d need for an interview. And they need your support to do so. If you have any new or gently used clothes that you would like to donate to the closet you can drop them off at a number of locations at the university.
