Peanut butter could land your dog in the animal hospital

SALISBURY, Md. – If you’re a dog mom or dad, chances are you’ve probably fed your pup peanut butter at some point. Maybe it was to help the medicine go down, or maybe it was a treat, but studies suggest certain peanut butters can actually be deadly for your dog.

Some peanut butters that you find at the health food store advertise themselves as low sugar, meaning they use an ingredient called xylitol to make it sweet.

While xylitol isn’t dangerous to humans, it can be deadly for dogs.

47ABC spoke to a local veterinarian who said it’s best to check the ingredients of anything you plan on feeding to your dog to make sure it doesn’t contain this harmful ingredient.

Dr. Michael Peters, a Veterinarian at Johnson-McKee Animal Hospital in Salisbury said, “Check labels, anything that has a label that indicates that there is a compound that has Xyl in the name or even Zyl in the name, they should stay away from it with regard of giving it to their pets.”

Veterinarians told 47ABC xylitol is actually more harmful to your dog than chocolate, so be sure to check those ingredients!
