New “Emergency Pantry” in elementary school at Indian River School District

GEORGETOWN, Del. –  One school in the Indian River School District is primarily made of children from low income families. With students in need, North Georgetown Elementary is stepping up by creating a new emergency pantry.

It will have tons of food and even a clothing locker, stocked with shoes and sweaters.

But it’s not just limited to students in North Georgetown. It’s open to all families who have children in the Indian River School District.

There are multiple partners involved behind this project such as the Georgetown/Millsboro Rotary Club, the Harry K Foundation, and Delaware Food Bank.

Stephanie Roash, Executive Director of Harry K Foundation tells us, “We look at the schools that have the highest percentage of children that are on free and reduced meal plans, so those are the schools that children will most likely to have food insecurities in their home as well.”

Families are allowed to come once a month and get 30 pounds of food and 5 pounds of household goods. Friday will be the very first day the pantry will open its doors from 9 AM-1 PM by appointment only. You can call 302-855-2430 to make an appointment.

For now, they are open for one day and depending on its success, they’ll see if they’ll open up more days.
