More than one thousand volunteers make IRONMAN Maryland a success
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The weather was absolutely perfect across Delmarva on Saturday, which was great news for all the events going on including IRONMAN Maryland in Cambridge.
Thousands of elite athletes from all around the world took on the challenge of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles as part of this race. It’s an all day affair that takes an enormous amount of preparation and teamwork. Many of the race organizers say it’s the more than 1,300 volunteers that made this entire event possible.
“The volunteers are just so enthusiastic. They’re ready to do absolutely anything, to help the athletes reach their goals. They’re yelling. They’re cheering. You know, they’re out here for hours. There’s some people that will be here volunteering from 4:30 in the morning all the way through midnight. It’s just their enthusiasm and love of the sport, love of the athletes, that really just helps them through and makes it a great day,” said Angie Hengst, the Volunteer Director for IRONMAN Maryland.
Athletes participating had 17 hours to complete the 140.6 miles. The awards ceremony is at 9:30, Saturday morning. For a list of the race results, click here.
