Early morning crash in Lewes under investigation
LEWES, Del. – A morning crash involving a Delaware State Police Trooper and a pedestrian is currently under investigation.
At approximately 5:04 AM Tuesday, a Delaware State Police trooper was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway in a fully marked, 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe, approaching a green light at the intersection of Dartmouth Drive. A 67-year-old male from Lewes was attempting to cross Coastal Highway within the crosswalk, in a motorized wheelchair.
The pedestrian failed to obey the cross walk signal, and crossed directly in front of the trooper. The trooper braked suddenly and swerved to the left to attempt to avoid the collision, however, they were unable to avoid striking the left side of the motorized wheelchair in the middle of the crosswalk. The pedestrian was ejected from the wheelchair and came to rest in the northbound lane of travel.
The pedestrian was transported to Beebe Medical Center by ambulance, where he reportedly remains in stable condition. The trooper, on duty and assigned out of Troop 7 at the time of the incident, was wearing his seatbelt and did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.
The Delaware State Police Reconstruction Unit is investigating this incident. Northbound Coastal Highway near Dartmouth Drive was closed for roughly two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
