Delmarva Poultry Industry offers storm tips for poultry farmers
GEORGETOWN, Del. – As we continue to brace for the effects of Hurricane Florence, the Delmarva Poultry industry is advising poultry growers to prepare for the storm. Officials we spoke to at the Delmarva Poultry Industry say farmers could experience power outages, flooding and more, which could affect their chickens. That’s why they say farmers should start preparing now to make sure their chicken farms are ready to operate as normal as possible, if anything were to happen.
“They are checking to make sure their electrical generators are well-maintained but they have enough fuel to operate for several days if they need to get making sure they have enough propane on their farms and they’re making sure they have enough chicken feed in their silos to last several days if they need to,” said Communications Director of the Delmarva Poultry Industry James Fisher.
Fisher also says that you should check the roof, siding, windows, and doors of the chicken houses to make sure they will not blow off or blow open. He adds that the corners and edges of those types of buildings are especially vulnerable.
