Del. man arrested on assault charges
MILFORD, Del. – A Milford man is in custody following a reported assault that took place over the weekend.
Shortly after 11:00 PM on Saturday, the Milford Police Department Patrol Division was called to respond to the 100 block of McColley Street, for a reported assault. When they arrived at the scene, officers made contact with the victim, who told them that someone by the name of “Will” had allegedly punched them in the chest.
The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Wilbur Spells, of Milford. After further investigation, officers learned that what began as a verbal altercation between Spells and the victim eventually turned physical, resulting in Spells allegedly punching the victim in the chest. Both Spells and the victim were reportedly intoxicated during the time of the incident.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Spells was taken into custody and charged with offensive touching, and was transported back to the Milford Police Department.
Spells was initially committed to the Department of Correction due to his intoxication. It was later revealed that Spells was on GPS monitoring through Delaware Probation and Parole. Because of his monitoring status, Probation and Parole violated Spells probation, and he was transported to the Sussex Correctional Institution.
Spells received a $500 unsecured bail following his arraignment on the charge, but received a $9000 secured bail for the violation of probation. He has been ordered to appear in Sussex County Court of Common Pleas at a later date.
