City of Lewes considers adding parking garage
LEWES, Del. – It’s no secret that parking has been a major issue in the City of Lewes.
Every summer, residents and visitors alike struggle to find parking and people end up parking in neighborhoods which causes frustration among residents.
To solve the problem, the city created two parking committees to come up with solutions.
Local businesses suggested to the committees that the city create a new parking garage.
We’re told a study was done on parking back in 2012 and that study determined it was not feasible to build a parking garage back then, but now six years later, we’re told the city is considering it.
The Mayor of the City of Lewes, Ted Becker said, “It’s something we will consider it is a huge expense to build a parking garage and we need to figure out where sources of revenue would come from to pay for it and what the public’s use would be of it and what would be a real estate amount of money we could charge to park in such a garage or how it would be charged otherwise.”
We’re told another solution that has been discussed is having a shuttle bring people in and out of the city but that idea has since been shut down because city leaders said they believe visitors would not be receptive to the shuttles.
