Camdyn’s Crusaders fighting against Type 1 juvenile diabetes, spreading awareness

FELTON, Del. – “We could’ve just written it off, and she could’ve been a lot sicker,” said Tracy Hayes mother to Camdyn Hayes.

A brave young girl from Delmar, Delaware, Camdyn was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.

Her mom tells us, its been an uphill battle. Hayes said, “We learned how to take care of her and give insulin injections and count carbs and change our whole lifestyle to be able to act as her pancreas.”

Although the lifestyle change has been an adjustment for the Hayes family, they’re not letting this “bump in the road” stop them from living life to the fullest.

As for Camdyn, we’re told she’s unphased by her disease.

Hayes said, “She’s done a great job standing up for herself and being strong about it.”

Recognizing strength as one of their core values, the Hayes family calls themselves “Camdyn’s Crusaders.”

They’re fighting back against Type 1 Diabetes one step at a time, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Chris McEntee, a JDRF board member for the Delaware chapter said, “Our cause here is finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.”

Camdyn’s Crusaders’ participation in Sunday’s “JDRF One Walk” is just one example of how this family is dedicated to finding a cure and helping other families.

McEntee also said, “Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of Americans and events like this that raise funds that go directly to the research supporting the cause.”

Now Camdyn’s Crusaders have a message for other parents. Hayes said, “Trust your gut and know signs and symptoms and understand type one is totally different than type two.”

Overall, Sunday’s walk helped to raise money for research while also giving families and kids like Camdyn, the opportunity to come together, share their trials and tribulations, and most importantly, have fun!

Hayes said, “When we were on the way here and she said she couldn’t wait to meet other “Type 1″ friends. She really doesn’t know there’s others. There’s over 800 kids in her school and only three are diabetic so she was excited to see other kids kind of like her.”
