Annual tournament honors fallen Deputy Brian K. Heller

SALISBURY, Md. – Dozens of people came together on Saturday to honor a former Worcester County deputy who died in the line of duty.

According to officials, Deputy First Class Brian K. Heller was killed more than 17 years ago in a single car accident while responding to another officer.

According to the mother of the fallen hero, the tragic accident motivated relatives to start the Deputy Brian K. Heller Memorial Classic tournament at the Salisbury Gun Club.

She says the purpose of the tournament is to remember Heller, while at the same time supporting local first responders.

“[First responders] sacrifice hours spending with their families to be out there with our families to help us, and they’re the ones running into danger when everybody is running out,” said the mother of Heller,¬†Connie Widmann.

“So yea, my son did a lot in his short period of time,” said Widmann.

All the proceeds collected during the tournament will benefit the Maryland Concerns of Police Survivors, as well as the Wor-Wic College DFC Brian K. Heller Scholarship Fund.
