Wicomico County Public Schools receives $1.7M award

More than a million dollars will be heading to Wicomico County to help improved literacy rates for children.

The money is part of grants handed out by the Maryland State Department of Education.

In total Wicomico County will receive 1.7 million dollars from the award over the next three years.

According to the Wicomico County Public Schools Director of Curriculum and Professional Development Ruth Malone, the new funding will help to foster higher-level thinking and provide things like laptops for students.

"I can't stress strongly enough how important these funds are to us in terms of expanding what we have and improving and enhancing the reading programs that we offer students from birth all the way to grade 12," said Malone.

The new grant will also help the Wicomico Public Libraries, Wicomico Early Childhood Council and other agencies that support literacy initiatives.
