Teachers ring in the new school year and celebrate 150 years of public education

SALISBURY, Md. – A lot of kids will head back to school once the Labor Day holiday is over, and that includes students in the Wicomico County School District.

Thursday, to celebrate the state of the new year, and the 150th year of public education in Wicomico County, over 2,400 teachers and staff members held a special kick-off event.

Teachers who 47 ABC spoke with on Thursday say that like the staff, students should be pumped to return, see familiar faces, and learn new things.

Some that spoke with 47 ABC say that they’re doing everything they can to make sure students and parents are set for the new year.

David Bolen, a physical education teacher said, “Just give it your best. Everybody is nervous, it’s good to be excited, its good to be nervous. Its going to be a good year.”

Another teacher in the county said, “We’re giving back, doing the best we can do for our students, our staff, our community, and our parents!”

At the end of Thursday’s rally the Wicomico Teacher of the Year for 2018 to 2019, Lisa McKinnon was awarded with a brand new Chevy Equinox donated by the Hertich Family of Automobile Dealerships.
