Teachers jazzing up classrooms to get ready for first day of school

Cambridge, Md. – The back to school countdown is on for students across Delmarva and teachers in our area are prepping your kids for success.

Heather Edgar, a math teacher at Maple Elementary School said, “Hours and days ahead of time.”

Mable Johnson, another teacher said, ”We won’t even be able to count the hours, we will be here late at night.”

Countless hours of hard work are just the beginning of all that goes in to getting schools ready for incoming students.

Johnson also said, “We will stay here just to make sure this classroom is ‘A-1’ for our students.”

By spending hours jazzing up their classrooms, teachers know it’s more than just showing off whose room is best.

Its about the students and creating a learning environment that’s equally as exciting as it is enriching for kids to learn and grow.

Edgar said, “It’s really important for them to feel comfortable in the room that they’re going to be spending a lot of their time in and learning in.”

Johnson said, “We want them to come here and have fun. While they’re having fun, they’re actually learning without even realizing.”

Even with the jazzy classrooms, some students may still have trouble adjusting to the new school year.

That’s why teachers have designated “cool down” areas to allow students to regroup throughout the day.

One teacher said, “If a child is having a rough time during the day, the cool down area is where they’re going to come and sit. They can read; they can draw; they can do whatever they need to do.”

From cool down areas to circle time set up, and everything else in between, the prep work is no problem for the teachers and they say the reward makes it all worth it.

Johnson also said, “To see that little smile on their face or the recognition in their eyes, when they realize they’ve been struggling and finally something clicks, that’s the thing that makes my heart smile.”
