Public offers input on new elementary school

Local parents are getting the opportunity to mold their children’s future elementary school.  The old Beaver Run Elementary and Wicomico Early Learning Center are becoming one, replacing the old school along Old Ocean City Road.

Thursday, parents had the opportunity to add their opinions to the blueprints from the new school.

Many parents we talked to said they were happy with the plans.  Including a new media center, three separate playgrounds for different age groups, and the spacious layout.

“Not only the space, the parking space, and the whole area of the infrastructure in general will be a great idea for the community,” said Kevin Parsons.

Despite almost unanimous positive reaction to the new plans at the public input sessions, some parents still had some questions.  Such as what interior classrooms will look like and accessibility to the new building.

“They do not have on the plans anything for handicap accessibility, so that is something that I would want to know for people who may have challenges,” said Trina Townsend.

“I’d only say something about like the deaf community for kids that’s coming in that’s deaf to have more interpreters or more one on ones for them,” said Myiesha Conner.

Many parents we spoke with say they hope to see a more in depth depiction of classrooms within the new school.

“I would like to know the design of the classrooms, or even where the structure is as far as where the teacher is as opposed to where the desks and the students will be, because visual learning is very important,” added Townsend.

Public input will continue to be taken by the Wicomico County Board of Education.  The new Beaver Run Elementary School is scheduled to be opened in 2022.
