A Maryland volunteer fire company is warning community members about a scam that requests donations via mail.

DENTON, Md. – The Denton Volunteer Fire Company says on Monday, the company was informed about a mailer soliciting the community for volunteers or monetary donations to “continue our national recruitment effort”. Officials say the Volunteer Firefighter Alliance is not associated with the Denton VFC in any way.

Denton VFC says the mailing is fake. Officials say Denton VFC does directly solicit the community but that it is through their own fund drive and those letters are mailed around September and October. Community members should throw these letters away as they are not associated with the Denton Volunteer Fire Department.

Denton VFC officials say all of the funds received during their fund drive is are deposited into the Denton Volunteer Fire Company’s General Fund and used for tools, equipment and operating expenses to provide fire and rescue services to the communities they serve.
