SEAFORD, Del. – An investigation is ongoing after officials say one person was treated and released for smoke inhalation as a result of a Sussex County fire.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office says on Monday, around 5:07 PM, a fire was reported in the 500 block of E. Stein Highway. Once on scene, officials say the Seaford Volunteer Fire Company found heavy black smoke in the upper half of the single-story Family Dollar store.

Fire officials say the Seaford VFC was assisted by Blades, Bridgeville, Georgetown, Milton, Greenwood Laurel, Delmar and three neighboring  fire companies from Maryland. We’re told the flames expanded quickly and because of the severe heat outside, the different agencies were constantly rotating to help each other out.

According to the report, one employee was treated and released for minor smoke inhalation and the blaze caused $3 million in damages. Seaford VFC says the inside is a complete loss.

Officials determined the cause of the fire to be arson.

This incident remains under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office.
