Jury finds Lasonya Sargent guilty of murder

CAMBRIDGE, Md – The murder trial we’ve been following in Dorchester County is over and the verdict is in. Lasonya Sargent has been found guilty of first degree murder, and for the family of Sharod Mack justice is theirs. Earlier this afternoon an eerie silence filled the courtroom as family members and friends for both Mack and Sargent anxiously waited for the final verdict from the jury. That verdict, which took the jury three hours to reach, was met with silent cheers and smiles from Mack’s family and sadness from the people who were here to support Sargent. For Sargent, the guilty verdict means she will now face serious jail time for first and second degree murder, assault in the first degree and use of a firearm. State’s attorney William Jones told 47 that he’s gratified by the jury’s decision and hopes that this verdict will bring justice to the family of Sharod Mack whose life was taken back in January. Now that Sargent has been found guilty of first degree murder, the state’s attorney will be seeking the punishment of a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Now the judge did not disclose when exactly Sargent’s sentencing date will be, but he did say it would be scheduled within the next 75 to 90 days. The judge also added that Sargent has up to 10 days to request a new trial.
