Former OC mayor Roland “Fish” Powell passes away before his 90th birthday

OCEAN CITY, Md. – It’s a sad day in Ocean City, as former Mayor Roland Powell passed away Wednesday morning at 89 years old.

His nickname is “Fish” and we don’t know where it came from but it’s a great nickname for a prominent figure who has represented OC for all these years.

Powell has played many different leadership roles. From fire chief of the volunteer company, to being a councilman and county commissioner, he’s always been very involved. He’s also served as the mayor for ten years.

Mayor Rick Meehan tells 47 ABC, Powell has made a significant impact on the town through his beach replenishment efforts and expanding the Convention Center, which is named after him.

But his biggest impact is the mark he’s left on the community.

“I just think Fish had that type of personality that made him a good leader and it made people want to follow in the direction that Fish was heading them. And I felt that, I served with Fish since 1985, I learned a lot from him. He was a dear friend, a mentor,” Mayor Meehan says.

On September 5th, they will have a service for Powell at the Convention Center.

The wake will be from 11-1 with a service to follow. It would have been his 90th birthday on that day.
