End of Summer Heat Wave

With summer almost over, and some kids already back in school, it’s hard to believe Delmarva is in the midst of another heat wave. Luckily, the heat will break by the end of the week.

A heat wave is defined as three or more days in a row with high temperatures at or above 90 degrees. This current stretch of 90 degree temperatures will be Salisbury’s fifth heat wave of the summer.

The reason our temperatures will be so hot is because a high pressure system is anchored off the Atlantic coast. This brings hotter air from the south and west into the region. The heat will continue until a front moves through the area, ushering in a cooler air mass.

Luckily, a cold front is forecasted to move through Thursday night. Temperatures on Friday will be returning to the low to mid 80s, which is seasonable for this time of year. This cold front is expected to stall over Delmarva Friday and Saturday bringing more unsettled weather to the peninsula. Scattered showers and storms are possible Friday through Labor Day, but the holiday weekend won’t be a total washout.

In the meantime, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade if you plan to spend any extended time outside during this heat.
