UPDATE: Harbeson man identified after trooper involved shooting; investigation ongoing

HARBESON, Del.  – An investigation is ongoing after authorities say a man has died as a result of a shooting involving two troopers in Delaware.

Delaware State Police say on Tuesday morning troopers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 22000 block of Harbeson Road. Upon entering the home, troopers say they encountered a 50-year-old paraplegic man who was lying in bed.

Authorities report that the suspect proceeded to obtain a handgun that was in arms reach. According to the report, a struggle over the weapon then began which led to two troopers firing their division-issued handgun. DSP says detectives recovered a loaded handgun, drugs and other weapons from the scene.

Law enforcement reports that the suspect sustained gunshot wounds and he was taken to a Beebe medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries. Troopers identified the Harbeson man as 50-year-old Robert Knox.

According to DSP, the troopers who were involved in the shooting have been employed with DSP for eight years and seven years, respectively. Officials say both troopers have been placed on administrative leave according to division policy. DSP reports that one trooper sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident.

This incident remains under investigation by the DSP Homicide Unit.
