Day 4: Lasonya Sargent Trial

CAMBRIDGE, Md – It’s Day 4 of the Lasonya Sargent trial, where the defendant Lasonya Sargent is charged with killing her then boyfriend Sharod Mack in January of 2018.
On Thursday, jury members continued to listen to the testimonies of two expert witnesses who’ve provided critical information regarding the case. Sargent sat quietly and attentively as she took notes during both witnesses testimonies.
The first person to take the stand was a firearm expert with the Maryland state police who presented and described the gun and three shell casings that were recovered at the scene, to the jury. Officials believe that was the gun Sargent used to shoot Mack, who was found upstairs at her Cambridge home, in bed with two bullet holes in his head. That same gun is also what officials believe Sargent used to shoot herself in the chest.
To address those speculations a DNA and forensic analyst took the stand stating that she did in fact find Sargent’s DNA on the gun. Now according to police, when they initially found Sargent with a gunshot wound to the chest, she said that two masked men broke into her home and were responsible for shooting both her and Mack. But police say after Sargent’s initial statement, her story kept changing.
They say she told police that she saw Mack being shot and killed, but then claimed she was downstairs and heard the gunshots. She then proceeded to say she had been raped by two or three men, and then was taken back upstairs and shot. But the forensic analyst who testified dispelled the rape accusation when she told the jury that she tested the rape kit, only to find DNA from her late boyfriend Sharod Mack. Further investigation has revealed that Mack did have another girlfriend who was pregnant at the time and was planning to leave Sargent. And police believe that was the motive behind the murder.
We will continue to follow this story and will provide more details as soon as they become available.
