City of Cambridge will now allow food trucks to operate

The City of Cambridge will now be allowing food trucks to operate downtown with very few restrictions.

The City Council approved the ordinance Monday night after months of debate.

City employees tell 47ABC the process of approving the ordinance wasn't easy because they wanted an outcome that would benefit everyone.

They said their biggest fear was that allowing food trucks to operate downtown would hurt pre-existing businesses.

In the end, the solution the city came up with was to allow food trucks to operate downtown, but not within 150 feet of any brick and mortar businesses.

Brandon Hesson, the Associate Director fof Economic Development for the City of Cambridge said, "I really think the city finally took a really good public step forward. We supported it all along, but it was finally an opportunity for us to get it out there that the city council really supports food trucks in the city."

If you are interested in having your food truck operate in downtown Cambridge, you are encouraged to call the public works department so they can walk you through the ordinance and help you understand it.
