Celebrating 82 years of tradition at the Wicomico County Fair

Celebrating 82 years of tradition is a big accomplishment for organizers at the Wicomico County Fair.
The annual event has been around for so long, some organizers have been along for the ride, for over half of its existence.
"I started here at 4-H at the age of nine so its been over 40 years," says Alan Gravenor, president of the Wicomico County Fair. Gravenor tells 47 ABC, being a part of the Wicomico County Fair is in his blood. As a child, both he and his sister would participate as vendors and now he's keeping their family tradition alive.
"Its been a family adventure. Summer time is when we would do our 4-H projects, we'd get up, get it ready for the fair and we all would make jams and jellies together."
Over the years, the fair has seen a few changes. But organizers tell us, the uptick in success comes from the new board members and over whelming community support, from the Chamber of Commerce and now the county's Parks and Recreation Department.
Zach Evans, chairman of the fair says, "We've really maintained the heritage and the traditions that have been so successful for the last 80 years and by bringing in some new folks, they were able to offer some unique perspective."
"Especially in the last five years or so. How it's grown. We we're about to shut down and now its grown into this huge event, here at Winter Place with thousands of people coming," says Alan Gravenor.
New ideas like bringing back equestrian events, adding local food vendors and even a pageant highlight the importance of inclusion and diversity to the fair. Something that Alan Gravenor says is worth the year long preparation.
"I plan on continuing with the event and helping. Its worth all the hard work we've done year round with all the meetings and planning and seeing the fun and good times the kids and public are having."
Preparing for the fair takes about a year, which is why organizers are asking for your help in contributing to its continued success.
