UPDATE: Police investigating fatal accident in Sussex Co.

UPDATE: The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that happened around 2:46 PM on Saturday. 

The incident occurred on West Piney Grove Road, south of East Trap Pond Road in Georgetown. 

According to police, a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by a 63-year-old man was traveling northbound on W. Piney Grove Road when he traveled off the right edge of the roadway onto a grassy area. 

It is unknown why he traveled off the roadway. 

The Georgetown man re-entered the roadway and traveled across the center line into the opposite lane right into the path of a 2006 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 53-year-old Georgetown woman. 

The man was unable to avoid the Chevrolet, resulting in a vehicle collision in the southbound lane.  

The 63 year old who was not wearing his seatbelt was trapped in his pickup truck and pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. 

The woman driving the Jeep, who was wearing her seatbelt, was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for about three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Troopers say they are currently on scene of a fatal crash that happened in Georgetown. 

Delaware State Police say at 3:00 PM, a crash happened at West Piney Grove Road, west of East Trap Pond Road.

Drivers should expect delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.

The investigation is ongoing with further information being released by police as it becomes available.
