UPDATE: Ocean City Boardwalk security project phase two

The Ocean City Council is getting ready to implement phase two for their Boardwalk access safety project.

According to the City Engineer Terry McGean, there are about 26 locations where a vehicle can drive onto the Boardwalk because the streets share the same elevation.

Town officials say phase two calls for the removal of the temporary barriers, to add permanent ones.

"While they’re preventative… if someone really wanted to take a truck at high speeds and get onto the boardwalk right now the barricades that are in place are not capable of stopping that," said McGean.

According to Council Member Wayne Hartman, the 4 million dollar project is a top priority for the council.

In addition, because the project is going to cost more than they expected they are asking the county for financial help moving forward.

"We would like for Worcester County to help us fund what we feel is a critical project given some of the events that have happened in the world in the last couple years," McGean said.

He said the phase two of the project is expected to be completed by October and could call for the removal of some of the city's parking.

Officials say that automated gates will be constructed on North Division Street and at the inlet parking lot, among other main locations.
