UPDATE: Man convicted for role in Del. crash that injured a child

A Delaware man is facing over two decades in prison after he was involved in a crash that permanently injured a 10-year-old child.

The Delaware Department of Justice says on Friday, 39-year-old Oliver Barnes, of Ellendale, pleaded guilty to assault first degree and driving under the influence of alcohol. The charges stem from a 2018 crash that severely injured a 10-year-old girl in Dover.

In March 2018, Barnes was driving at a speed approaching 100 miles per hour when he ran into a car stopped at a stop light at the intersection of Bay Road and Blue Hen Boulevard. Authorities say the crash caused permanent injuries to a 10-year-old girl who was in the car that was hit. According to the report, at the time of the crash, Barnes had a blood alcohol content of .25, more than three times the legal limit. 

Barnes faces between two to 25 years in prison when sentenced by a Superior Court judge in September.

The Ellendale man is currently serving a two-year sentence for a rape fourth degree conviction.
