UPDATE: Employees released from hospital after hazmat situation at Mountaire Farms facility

Several employees were released from a local hospital after officials say a hazmat situation happened at the Selbyville facility on Thursday.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources says they along with the Selbyville Fire Department responded to the hazmat situation. DNREC reports that 300 gallons of Acetic Acid (Vinegar) and Hydrogen Peroxide was spilled from a tank carrying the liquids. Officials say the spill was neutralized immediately and only impacted a parking lot.

According to Mountaire Farms, four employees were impacted by the situation. Mountaire Farms issued the following statement regarding the incident:

"Safety is our number one priority, both for our employees and the public. Around 11:40 a.m., four employees in the parking area of our Selbyville facility came in contact with a substance that assists in microbial intervention – a process used to create a bacteria free environment during production.

These employees were taken to a local hospital as a precaution. We are happy to report that they were evaluated and released."

Environmental officials report that there was no soil contamination or run-off into any drains and Mountaire Farms hired an environmental clean-up company, complying with DNREC's recommendations for clean-up.
