Three arrested in connection with Virginia surveillance operation

Three men were arrested after Maryland authorities say they seized contraband cigarettes valued at over $10,000.

The Comptroller of Maryland says on June 28, 54-year-old Quay Samuel Chaney, 59-year-old Ronald Tucker, and 65-year-old Edward Johns, all of Philadelphia, were arrested in Pocomoke City in connection with a surveillance operation on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Agents say Chaney was seen buying multiple amounts of cigarettes from several locations and hiding them in the back seat area of of a 2008 Volvo. 

According to the report, Chaney, Tucker, and Johns were then arrested shortly after driving into Worcester County, where the car was stopped by police at Sheep House Road. Officials say agents' search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 1,650 packs of contraband cigarettes which is valued at $10,642.50. the cigarettes were then seized.

Chaney, Tucker, and Johns were each charged with a felony count of transporting contraband cigarettes and a misdemeanor count of possession of contraband cigarettes.

Chaney is being held at the Worcester County Detention Center on a $16,500 bond.

Tucker and Johns were released on their personal recognizance. Both individuals are have hearings scheduled for July 17.
