Staying safe in the excessive holiday heat

Fourth of July celebrations are kicking off across the peninsula this weekend. But if you're not careful, those celebrations can turn tragic with the extreme heat Delmarva is experiencing.
Temperatures across Delmarva are soaring into the mid to upper 90s just as the peninsula is getting fired up for some Fourth of July fun.
It can be a dangerous combination. The oppressive heat combined with a day trip to the beach or some time grilling up some burgers and dogs.
If you plan on a beach day or being out in the sun in general, keeping a bottle of water or some SPF15 is a good, but here are some other tips to keep in mind.
Folks we spoke with had a good foundation for how to beat the heat, staying hydrated was the top answer. Having an umbrella was also a popular tip.
Other tips include avoiding strenuous activity, watch for heat cramps heat exhaustion or heat stroke and wear light clothing.
"Do chores outside early morning, or in the evening. Nothing like midday like this, were not mowing the lawn," said Vicky Smoker, a Milford resident.
And remember to check on others. Children, elderly and sick or overweight individuals are especially at risk. Finally, never leave children or your four legged family members in a closed car during weather like this.
