Salisbury dermatologist gives insight on different sunscreens during heat advisory

If you're going to the beach or planning to be outside, health officials are recommending that you apply as much sunscreen as possible.

But with so many options out there from lotions to spray on's, you're probably wondering which ones are the best.

47 ABC sat down with a Dr. Luette Semmes, adermatologist from Peninsula Dermatology in Salisbury, and we're told you won't see much of a change once you go higher than SPF 30.

For example, SPF 30 blocks about 96% of the sunlight. If you get SPF 50, it just blocks 97%.

But we do start to see a difference from SPF 8 and 15.

"An SPF 8 only blocks 50% of the sun's rays but a 15 blocks 93% or so but once you get those numbers above 15 you're already blocking a lot you only get a little increment more," Dr. Semmes says.

As for the difference between spray or lotion sunscreens, we're told it's mostly preference but since spray sunscreen is light and dries quickly, you have to rub it in to be sure you don't miss any spots.
