Some good news for local farmers across Delmarva, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has officially declared the excessive rains we received last month a disaster.

That means farmers will be able to apply for financial assistance from the government.

Farmers in the area are still hurting after six weeks of torrential rainfall in June, rain that destroyed thousands of crops.

11 counties are included in the disaster funds including Wicomico, Somerset, and Dorchester. The designation also includes Virginia's Accomack County and Sussex County in Delaware.

Farmers in eligible counties have eight months to apply for the emergency loans.
