(AP) – Police say a 7-year-old Baltimore girl shot while sitting in the back of a car earlier this month has died. The car's driver is being held without bail on gun and drug charges.

Baltimore police announced in a statement that second-grader Taylor Hayes succumbed to her injuries Thursday morning.

Taylor was shot July 5 while in the back seat of a car and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Another child seated beside her was uninjured.

Authorities say Darnell Holmes was driving the car at the time of the shooting. She was charged with possessing drugs and a gun after police found a loaded pistol, heroin, and a digital scale in her glove box.

An attorney for Holmes says Taylor was the daughter of Holmes' cousin.
