Officials warn of fox rabies in Sussex County

Public Health officials have issued a warning to Sussex County residents about rabies.

According to officials, residents and pets who live near March Island Golf Club and Angola Road may have been affected by a fox that tested positive for rabies.

They said the fox has been captured and so far only one person and a dog have reported being bitten by the fox. Both the person and the dog have been treated in order to prevent further exposure.

According to the Division of Public Health, rabies can seriously affect both humans and animals.

"Rabies is an infectious disease and it affects the nervous system of humans and animals," said Division of Public Health spokesperson, Jen Brestel.

"It can occur through a bite or a scratch, but the important thing is that if you get treatment right away it can prevent the disease from setting in," said Brestel.
