Officials say a pony died in a tragic accident following Thursday's pony auction in Accomack County.
The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company says the pony known as Butterfly Kisses died after a freak accident in the pen at the carnival grounds. Officials say Riptide was chasing her and she slipped into the fence while running. The pony broke its neck as a result of the incident.
According the report, there was no chance of survival and the veterinarian and cowboys were at the scene within minutes. Officials report that the pony was euthanized and her body was taken back to Assateague where she was buried.
According to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, the pony's foal was bought by a local family who owns horses and they immediately came and took the baby home. The baby was already started on a bottle and will be supplemented.
The incident happened following the 93rd annual Chincoteague Pony Swim held on Wednesday morning.
