Local organization installing free ACs to people in need

With the extreme heat we've been facing here on Delmarva, it's hard to imagine making it through a day without air conditioning.

Unfortunately for some though they have no other choice, which is something that a local organization is trying to change.

First State Community Action Agency is helping out families and individuals in need by installing free air conditioners.

Their Summer Cooling Assistance Program has already helped over 100 people in Delaware and over 50 of those are in Sussex County.

In order to qualify though you must meet certain qualifications.

"We really try to prioritize our children and then the seniors so by the time our installers get out there the people are so relieved and they are just gracious to have i,t so that does our heart good and we're able to move to the next county and so on and able to get those installed," explains Sharon McPhatter, the First State CAA Program Manager.

You have to be 200 percent under the poverty guideline to be eligible for the program. The program runs through September 30th so there is still time to apply and you can do that by calling 302-856-7761.
